Mangosteen is one of the most esteemed tropically grown fruits, and is the most known fruit in the Guttiferae family, the mangosteen or Garcinia mangostana L., is known of as mangosteen. There are numerous variations in many cultures: to the French, it is mangostier, mangoustanier, mangouste or mangostanier; among Spanish-speaking people, it is called mangostan; in Dutch, it is manggistan or manggis; in Portuguese, it is mangosta, mangostao or mangusta; in Malaya, sementah, semetah, mesetoror ; in Vietnamese, mang cut; in the Philippines, it is mangostan or mangis.
Mangosteen is a small fruit about the size of a tangerine. The outside, or rind, of the fruit is leathery with scars and scraps. This outer rind helps protect a delicious inner pulp. The inner pulp has been described as the best tasting fruit on the planet. Mangosteen's grow on small tree in and around Malaya, Thailand and Burma. The mangosteen fruit usually grows in clusters of 3 to 9 fruits and is dark purple in color. The Mangosteen tree is a slow growing and small, typically between 20 ft to 82 Ft height.
Mangosteen has been so revered in the past that Queen Victoria once stated that anyone that brought her a fresh supply of mangosteen would instantly become a knight. Other cultures refer to the mangosteen fruit as "Queen of Fruits" or Fruit of the Gods".
